modern folklore

BOOK

Nordic folklore contains many creatures and stories that serve as warnings or the people of the day. You would not want to walk alone; in the forest the huldra might lure you astray, you could be tricked by the lygtemand in the swamp or hypnotize and dragged you to the bottom of a lake by the näck.

modern

yet familiar

Folklore stories should fit into the everyday world, they are supposed to be eerie and and rely on the feeling of "this might happen to me or someone i know". This is a project to recreate these creatures so they reflect present day issues while retaining the classic features of the creatures.

materials, tests and sketches

Mixing the black and white ink illustrations with color-shifting paper gave the Lygtemand's hair the glowing effect I was aiming for, but it had to be cut in the final print of the book.

The early sketches ranged from quick comic strips to more detailed pencil sketches exploring the look and personality of the lore creatures and their role in the 21st century. The main question was: How do they exploit the modern world?
